Two-thirds of last year's research is free to read. Nearly half of India's is not, and that is the wrong half to be missing

We measured it: of 14.67 million works published in 2025, 4.65 million are closed. For work with an Indian affiliation, 46 per cent is closed. And the further back a literature review reaches, the thinner the free tier gets — 1995 is only 15.7 per cent open.
