Nearly two-thirds of the world's open-access journals charge authors nothing. Almost everyone believes the opposite

We queried DOAJ's own index on 20 September 2026: of 23,489 open-access journals, 14,702 charge no article processing fee at all. Of the 436 published from India, 296 charge nothing. The free tier of scholarly publishing is much larger than its reputation.
