Bacteria on an indwelling device build a matrix that antibiotics struggle to penetrate, which is why removal is so often the treatment. Coatings are the attempt to prevent that, and their record is more mixed and more interesting than the marketing suggests — including one large trial that found a widely used coated catheter did not help.
